RE ENACTORS WILL TELL THE STORY OF ONE OF THE MOST politically and philosophically divided regions of the country. Knoxville neighbors quickly became mortal enemies. In the beginning, brother already literally lined up to fight against brother at opposing recruitment points on opposite ends of Gay Street. Matters only worsened over the course of the war as Union and Confederate forces took turns occupying the city, both of them viewing the citizens as the enemy. Knoxville’s police weren’t just disbanded; its members also became military prisoners. Men suspected of holding sentiments at odds with the occupying side were arrested and sent to “Camps of Instruction”. Soldiers moved into homes with or without invitation. Possession of weapons, alcohol, even dogs were forbidden. Anything and everything could be confiscated. Food, shelter and clothing became scarce. And then, one of the coldest winters remembered hit the region. By the end of the Civil War, regardless if they had been a soldier or a civilian, every one in Knoxville was a veteran.
